Opportunity: Open Rank Bioinformatics Analyst I and Bioinformatics II @ University of Maryland -- Baltimore, MD (US)
Submitted by Jana Anderson; posted on Wednesday, April 13, 2022

    BACKGROUND

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Genomics Resource Center (GRC) at the Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is recruiting for a Bioinformatics Analyst, and is considering applicants for level one (I) or level (II). Comprised of an inter-disciplinary, multi-department team of investigators, IGS uses the powerful tools of genomics and bioinformatics to understand genome function in health and disease, to study molecular and cellular networks in a variety of model systems, and to generate data and bioinformatics resources of value to the international scientific community.

The Genomics Resource Center (GRC) is a high-throughput laboratory and data analysis group supporting the scientific programs of IGS and its collaborators, both across the University of Maryland Baltimore campus and across the globe. Using multiple sequencing and analysis platforms, the GRC generates high-quality genomic data in a cost-effective manner. The bioinformatics group in the GRC includes researchers with expertise in genomic data management, genome assembly, genome analysis and annotation, comparative analysis, cancer genomics, and clinical genomics.

Bioinformatics Analysts contribute to genomic research projects and scientific analysis of the data generated by those projects using a variety of database and software applications. The responsibilities include generation, management, annotation, and analysis of high-throughput genomic data and preparing for further analysis, research, or publication.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Bioinformatics Analyst I:

Accomplishes responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline normally acquired through advanced education or specialized training. Resolves issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking. Contributes to development and evaluation of goals and objectives. Creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance. May supervise, mentor, or coordinate work of others (positions that supervise are responsible for service delivery, quality assurance, and employee performance). May independently manage or administer programs, processes, projects, or resources.

Applies entry level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills. Decision making occurs within defined parameters. Supervisor defines assignments, expectations, and deadlines. Supervisor may review work for quality. Demonstrates initiative and discretion to resolve routine and non-routine matters.

Primary Duties:
    • Contribute to genomic research projects and scientific analysis of the data generated by those projects using a variety of database and software applications. Generate, annotate, gather or analyze data and prepare for further analysis, or research.
    • Following established procedures or specific scientific protocols, add value to data generated by genome sequencing projects through assembly, annotation, curation, and quality assurance.
    • Perform preliminary analysis of genomic data and format for use by other analysts or scientists.
    • Integrate and analyze data from genome sequencing projects, functional genomics analysis, and other school of medicine research projects.
    • Perform data mining and synthesis activities using various internal resources, public databases and publications.
    • Organize genomic data with other relevant data types into databases, displays, or graphic presentations for publication and web presentation.
    • Participate in community outreach and training.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
