    The Center for Quantitative Life Sciences at Oregon State University invites applications for a Bioinformatics Trainer (Faculty Research Assistant).

    BACKGROUND:
    The Center for Quantitative Life Sciences (CQLS) at Oregon State University collaborates with and assists life scientists of all levels in their research using cutting-edge genomics, informatics, and computational techniques. The purpose of this position is to provide bioinformatics research consulting services and provide bioinformatics research and education. The CQLS is an enthusiastic team of data, computer, and laboratory scientists serving OSU and beyond.

    This position will work closely with OSU's COVID analysis group. Responsibilities and duties include analysis of genomics and transcriptomics data sets, especially in the context of viral phylodynamics, development of new tools in bioinformatics and computational biology, and assistance with the preparation of publications and grant proposals. This position will also teach workshops to promote the CQLS's mission of bioinformatics research and education. This position will contribute to advancing the diversity, equity and inclusion goals of the Center and the University.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    50% Bioinformatics research:
    Participate in funded research projects requiring skills in data science, bioinformatics, computational biology and biocomputing, especially those related to SARS-Cov-2 phylodynamics. Carry out analysis of large-scale data sets from the life and environmental sciences, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics data sets as a service for clients of the CQLS. May involve development of new tools and algorithms, preparation of grant proposals, writing of papers, and attendance at conferences.

    42.5% Bioinformatics training:
    • Implement and continually update existing, short workshops and classes (3 days to 3 weeks) in topics in bioinformatics, computational biology, programming, and data science.
    • Develop and implement new workshops as desired by the OSU research community.
    • Incorporate distance learning methodologies or other cutting edge educational solutions where needed, to provide a high quality of service for learners.
    • One-on-one training activities specific to individual learner needs.
    • Collaborate with other CQLS staff in organizing the CQLS Bioinformatics Users' Group and other community-based efforts.
    7.5% Administration duties:
    Participate in CQLS staff meetings, equity & inclusion training, and outreach. Follow guidelines aligning with the CQLS Strategic Plan.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    Minimum/Required Qualifications:
    • M.S. in bioinformatics, or computational biology, or related field (at time of hire).
    • Minimum of one term experience as a teaching assistant in biology, bioinformatics, computational biology or computer science, or equivalent experience with formalized delivery of training in an industrial, academic, or other setting.
    • Experience in a Linux or Unix environment.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with shell scripting, Python, R, or other programming languages.
    • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, independence, high motivation, and excellent communication skills, both orally and written.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to work in remote setting if needed
    PREFERENCES:
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Ph.D. in bioinformatics, or computational biology, or related field.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with bioinformatics software for nucleic acid assembly, alignment, and statistical analysis, including building pipelines.
    • Experience with distance learning technologies and methodologies.
    • Experience as an industry or academic consultant in bioinformatics, computational biology, or computer science or other experience working in a service position.
    • Experience using high performance computing and queue submission.
    • Undergraduate degree or diploma in computer science or biology
    • Training in biostatistics
    • Experience in outreach and engagement with underserved communities
    • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
