RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general direction of the faculty supervisor, manage and perform diagnostic testing and related activities in the CAHFS-Davis Avian and Mammalian virology sections and participate in development, evaluation, and validation of new or improved virus isolation techniques and confirmation testing procedures, including molecular and sequence analysis-based techniques. In consultation with the academic section leader manages special projects for multiple diagnostic disciplines. Responsible for genetic sequence evaluation, interpretation and phylogeny analysis for diagnostic use and as a component of publishable research and development efforts.QUALIFICATIONS
Required:- Master's degree and work experience in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or closely related fields or equivalent combination of education and experience in Next Generation Sequencing and bioinformatics.
- Recent experience in NGS data management and analysis utilizing various bioinformatics packages and pipelines.
- Experience with one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, or C/C++.
- A comprehensive understanding of public sequence repositories (i.e. GenBank) and how to obtain and upload sequence data from them.
- Knowledge and skills to develop, implement, perform, critically evaluate, quality control, and resolve technical problems related to molecular testing procedures.
- Knowledge and experience to instruct, technically train, and provide consultation to technical and professional personnel.
- Flexibility to quickly adapt to changing technology, schedules, and work environment.
- Experience with virus isolation procedures including, propagating and maintaining primary and continuous cell lines, and methods of containment, decontamination and disposal of infectious and biohazardous materials.
- Experience developing, implementing, and utilizing Quality Assurance programs in a diagnostic environment.
- Knowledge and skills to perform complex diagnostic and assay development techniques utilizing virology, molecular biology and immunology under prescribed laboratory quality assurance and quality control guidelines.
- Strong interpersonal and organization skills to work effectively in fast paced, service oriented diagnostic BSL2 and BSL3 laboratory settings. Interest in statistic and data analysis.
