Opportunity: Integrative Methods Engineer -- Statistical Genetics @ Genentech -- South San Francisco, CA (US)
Submitted by Tiffany Doyle; posted on Wednesday, February 22, 2023

    BACKGROUND

Genentech seeks to take advantage of an inflection point we are rapidly approaching where the 'bigness' of biomedicine turns into an advantage. Our Translational Genomics initiative spearheads this effort and spans the interface of human genetics, functional genomics, molecular biology, disease model engineering, tissue and cellular profiling, and advanced computational methodology.

We are assembling an exabyte scale connected and computable data universe and are looking for an integrative methods engineer who will collaboratively design and deliver methods and tools that maximize the value of these data to provide us a better understanding of disease biology and help us prioritize targets for assessment.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

A person hired in this position will:
    • Collaboratively create scoring functions that leverage all relevant evidence to prioritize targets, proteins, and pathways in the context of a disease.
    • Prototype pipelines that rigorously integrate multimodal analysis results to create links between biological entities like variants, genes, proteins, cell types, pathways, and diseases.
    • Collaborate to design and oversee construction of tools that help our scientific community interpret biological relevance of analysis results.
    • Oversee a team of contract scientific programmers to implement production quality software solutions for prototype methods
    • Collaborate with therapeutic area scientists to understand and prioritize the development of the most relevant methods.
    • Partner with gRED's computational communities in the design and delivery of methodological solutions.
    • Maintain state-of-the-art expertise in newly developed disease genetics, functional genomics, and statistical genetics methods and technologies.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • PhD level (post-doc preferred) biologically-oriented computational scientist who has an interest in software engineering and is ready for a career change.
    • Has direct experience engaging in methods development, as evidenced by scientific publications leveraging these methods
    • Has an outstanding record in the delivery of analyses, open source contributions, or first authorship peer reviewed papers.

    PREFERENCES

Has experience overseeing teams of contract developers and/or bioinformaticians for methods productionalization and/or software engineering to deliver impact that spans multiple areas of focus.

    LOCATION

South San Francisco, CA. OR Remote Work Options Will Be Considered

    COMPENSATION

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $148,800-$276,400 Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
