    BACKGROUND

    The University of Arizona Division of Agriculture, Life, & Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension (ALVSCE) is seeking a scientific programmer who can help elevate the data science capacity and research in our division. The CCT Data Science team supports researchers across ALVSCE by helping scientists with analysis, software, data, and computing. The team offers training to researchers in the form of workshops and short courses and one-on-one help through office hours.

    The team also provides research support in the form of short term internally funded 'incubator projects' as well as longer term engagement with externally funded research programs. Incubator projects are five to ten days of work on focused, intensive, collaborative projects spread out over three to six months that often lead to publications and funding.

    Depending on experience and interest, contributions may include developing reproducible analyses, scalable workflows or software; applying and interpreting statistical models, developing APIs, dashboards, databases, visualizations and aiding in the interpretation of results. Curating and managing data. Group members are encouraged to learn and apply new skills.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Research:
    • The incumbent will have flexibility to develop and work on a variety of projects that Enable research across ALVSCE.
    • Develop and lead 'incubator' projects with researchers across campus.
    • Provide computational, statistical, and domain expertise for larger, externally funded projects.
    • Optionally publish manuscripts and contribute to or lead grants
    Building computational and data science capacity:
    • Work with researchers to enable new computational methods
    • Develop and deploy analytical pipelines.
    • Follow and demonstrate best practices in scientific computing, data and code management, documentation, and digital forms of communication.
    • Opportunity to develop and deliver workshops and related training materials on computational science and data science.
    Outreach:
    • Engage and interact with campus collaborators; represent the Data Science team at workshops, meetings, and conferences.
    • Meet regularly with group members and collaborators

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Master's degree and 5 years of relevant work experience required, or any equivalent combination of experience and education.
    • Experience with reproducible scientific programming.
    • Experience with Python.
    • Experience with machine learning or advanced statistical methods.
    • Experience working collaboratively in a team.
    • Experience teaching scientists new skills.

    PREFERENCES

    • A PhD with a significant computational component.
    • Training and experience in research domains and data science skills that complement those of current group members.
    • Experience with software such as JavaScript, R, and databases.
    • Experience with databases and cloud computing.
    • Experience with version control, particularly git and GitHub.
    • Research experience in physical, social, health, or human sciences.
