Research: Nature Genetics: Maximum likelihood pandemic-scale phylogenetics

Scientists have developed a new approach for analyzing the phylogeny of SARS-CoV-2 genomes called "MAximum Parsimonious Likelihood Estimation" (MAPLE). MAPLE is a likelihood-based method that allows for more accurate and efficient analysis of large-scale epidemiological genomic datasets, enabling the continued use of phylogenetic, phylogeographic, and phylodynamic analyses on datasets of millions of genomes. This breakthrough will help shed light on the virus's origins and its spread, including the emergence and reproductive success of new variants.
