    Opportunity: Assistant Professor of Computational Biology (Tenure Track) @ Georgia College & State University -- Milledgeville, GA (US)

    BACKGROUND

    The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Georgia College & State University invites applications for a tenure track position in Computational Biology to begin August 1st, 2024. We seek a highly trained individual who is committed to liberal arts education, and can demonstrate excellence in teaching and research. Teaching responsibilities will include 12 contact hours/semester. Primary teaching responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses including introductory biology and environmental sciences courses (majors and non-majors), introductory courses in computational biology as well as upper-level courses in the candidate's area of expertise. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop an independent research program in a facility equipped with high-performance computing capacity.

    There are two undergraduate majors within the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. We currently have 27 full time faculty members in the department with about 400 undergraduate biology majors, 100 environmental science majors, and an M.S. program in biology with approximately 20 students pursuing thesis and non-thesis degrees.     REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Research experience that demonstrates knowledge and applications in the area of bioinformatics or computational biology (demonstrated by publication record). We are seeking a candidate studying biology at any scale (ie. genomic processes, cellular organization and function, organismal development, genetic variation between species, ecological). The best candidate will excel in whatever impactful biological questions they are pursuing.
    • Ph.D. (ABD with Ph.D. completed by August 1st, 2024, considered) in Biological Sciences or related field.
    • The department is especially interested in candidates who can work collegially and effectively and whose experience, research, teaching, and service can contribute to the excellence of the academic community.
    • At least one year of cumulative teaching experience. This may include experience as TA, or workshop/bootcamp instructor.
    • Must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in C.S. 3.7.1 (http://www.sacscoc.org (faculty credentials)).
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Ability to teach introductory biology and/or environmental sciences courses and contribute to the core curriculum as well as upper division courses in computational biology or bioinformatics (e.g., Introduction to Computational Biology, Programming for Biologist, Statistics in R, etc.).
    • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., R, Python, Ruby, Perl, C/C++)
    • Ability and willingness to engage undergraduates and graduates in research.
