Opportunity: The Department of Computer Science invites applications for a Department Chair at the rank of full Professor or Associate Professor starting Fall 2024 @ Central Washington University (CWU) -- Ellensburg, WA (US)
Submitted by Chris Stone; posted on Tuesday, November 07, 2023

    BACKGROUND

Central Washington University (CWU) is one of three state-supported comprehensive regional universities in Washington State. With its robust focus on inclusivity and diversity, CWU has enrolled 33% minorities and graduates the largest percentage of Hispanic/Latino students of any public baccalaureate institution in the state.

Excellence in teaching is the core of the university's mission, and faculty engage in scholarship, invention, and creative activity to support teaching, to advance knowledge, and to provide outlets for creative expression. CWU faculty and alumni have received numerous honors and recognition, including CEO of the year, National Teacher of the Year, National Principal of the Year, and national-level recognition in many disciplines from music to physics.

The Department of Computer Science is undergoing a period of expansion. Starting with the 2021-22 academic year, the Washington state legislature awarded CWU $750,000 annually to develop and run a new computer science Bachelor of Science program in partnership with Highline College (HC) in Des Moines, Washington, near Seattle.

Starting with the 2022-23 academic year, the Washington state legislature awarded CWU $600,000 annually to expand cybersecurity education capacity. This includes funding to hire a faculty member with expertise in cybersecurity and to expand our lab facilities.

The Department has just launched a new Data Science Bachelor of Science degree program in partnership with the Mathematics Department. There are two specializations: Computational Data Science and Statistical Data Science. Furthermore, our Master's Degree program in Computational Science is the first of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, attracting both American and international students in an interdisciplinary, multicultural research and teaching environment.

The department also anticipates benefiting from a new state law that requires all school districts to offer a computer science course that counts for graduation elective class by the 2022-23 school year. These funding/growth opportunities, the partnership with Highline College, and the ongoing collaborative options with major industries in the Seattle high-tech area make this an especially exciting time to be a part of the CWU Computer Science department.
