The open-science publisher Frontiers has just launched FAIR² Data Management – an AI-driven service created to tackle a longstanding problem: roughly 90% of all scientific data never gets reused, which seriously hampers new discoveries. The platform automates the labor-intensive process of curating datasets, ensuring regulatory compliance, and formatting them correctly (steps that routinely required months of manual effort), so researchers are left with well-preserved, citable files that others can readily build upon. Of every 100 datasets generated, around 80 remain inaccessible in individual labs and only one typically contributes to further advances – a bottleneck that slows progress in areas ranging from cancer therapy to climate science. Early pilot projects covering COVID-19 variants, traumatic brain injury, environmental indicators, and biodiversity have already been completed, and the participating researchers report that the service markedly accelerates scientific work while properly recognizing the original data creators.
