    Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science (RIACS) and NASA Ames Research Center seek a scientist in the areas of Bioinformatics and Machine Learning to collaborate with RIACS and NASA scientists in pursuit of grand challenge problems in space biology.

    RIACS performs basic and applied computer science research in collaboration with NASA and university scientists to solve challenging scientific problems in support of NASA's goals and missions. RIACS is located at NASA Ames Research Center in the heart of Silicon Valley. RIACS is an institute of the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), a non-profit organization.

    Early studies indicate that space impacts life in profoundly different ways than on Earth, as demonstrated by gene expression data obtained in experiments in space and under simulated microgravity and high radiation environments. With its mission to improve life on Earth, to search for life outside our home planet, and to extend life to space, NASA has undertaken a broad range of activities in space biology and biotechnology. These activities are broadly focused on the the impact of the space environment on living matter, including risks, remedies, and potential benefits.

    RIACS and NASA Ames seek a scientist with a proven record in bioinformatics and a strong computer science background to contribute to this research program. The scientist will work closely with molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, and the the Machine Learning Group of the Computational Sciences Division at NASA Ames Research Center. Initial duties may include but are not limited to:
    • Collaboration with NASA scientists on the analysis and interpretation of microarray data related to space experiments;
    • Contributions to the development of machine learning and data mining methods for bioinformatics.
    The candidate will also play an active role and responsibility in identifying and applying for follow-on funding from NASA and other government agencies.

    The successful candidate will have many of the following qualifications:
    • A Ph.D. with 2 years experience, or a Master's degree and five years experience in Molecular Biology, Computer Science, or a related field.
    • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and methods.
    • Publication history in bioinformatics.
    • Wet lab experience.
    • Strong computer science and machine learning background.
    • Experience in statistics, Bayesian models, and Markov models.
    • Ability to work effectively with scientific personnel in multiple disciplines (e.g., life science and computer science).
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    Compensation for this position is competitive, and based on the candidates' experience and expertise.
