THE POSITION
The appointed candidate will have a group of 7 reports, mainly PhDs and be responsible for the further development of the group and its place as a key function within the company. This pivotal and challenging role offers the incumbent an opportunity to exploit, explore and champion the use of Bioinformatics throughout the drug discovery pipeline ? from target identification through to late stage discovery, lead optimisation and pharmacogenomics.
The successful candidate will need excellent interpersonal skills and will be expected to interact with key people in other departments. A creative approach to scientific research is important. The successful candidate will be able to use his/her knowledge, experience, and judgment to provide novel solutions to problems and to make a difference to the direction of the science.
The new incumbent will understand Bioinformatics systems and with this knowledge, exploit and use it.
THE CANDIDATE
The successful candidate will have the following background:
- A good honours degree in biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology or biological sciences. A higher degree, such as a PhD, in a relevant discipline would be beneficial.
- A minimum of three years? experience in Bioinformatics, of which at least two years would have been gained in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Practical experience of all main areas of bioinformatics, including microarray, sequence analysis, proteomics, knowledge management, etc.
- Extensive knowledge of biological techniques used in target identification.
- Proven experience of interacting with external collaborators and vendors.
- An understanding of drug discovery processes, chemoinformatics and genetics would be desirable.
- Proven skills in management and direction, where the candidate has managed a small team or supervised a small number of people for a minimum of two years, preferably in a team-leadership role.
