    "A company racing to become the first to sequence all the genes in the human body said on Tuesday it still hoped it could enter into a partnership with publicly funded researchers who have the same goal. Celera Genomics said it was willing to pool data with U.S. and British researchers who are collaborating in an effort to map the human genome, but said it wanted to make sure other companies could not cash in on its work....'Our sole concern, the only concern we have, is that our data would be used by a competing database company,' Gilman said in a telephone interview. 'We want to protect the database from being pirated,' he added."

    Well, I suppose even pirates can be pirated. Now if genes could not be patented, Celera would have no cause for concern, would it? Sweet, bitter irony.
