    Senior Bioinformatics Positon at the FMI (Basel, Switzerland, http://www.fmi.ch)

    BACKGROUND

    Tired of the poor funding in academia or the lack of freedom in a company? Want your own office?

    We are looking for an enthusiastic person with several years experience in bioinformatics. Extensive experience in sequence analysis, data mining/data integration and genome analysis is required. A good knowledge of UNIX, database programming and shell scripting is a plus. Candidates with a PhD are encouraged to apply but a masters together with several years of practical experience will also be considered. In addition to their support and development commitments the successful candidate will be encouraged to attend international bioinformatics conferences and to have the initiative to develop their own research projects in the field of bioinformatics.

    The FMI (http://www.fmi.ch), which is funded by the Novartis Research Foundation, is an International Institute with over 280 people of which approximately are 150 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students committed to basic research in areas as diverse as cellular growth control, epigenetic gene regulation and neurobiology. The FMI offers highly competitive academic salaries and it provides state-of-the-art core technologies, transgenic mouse facilities, computing, genomice, and proteomics services.

    The FMI is located in Basel, a city offering an outstanding scientific environment in the center of Europe.

    DESCRIPTION

    • Help and support: data mining, sequence comparisons, sequence alignment,
    BLASTs, individual projects with groups, etc.
    • Teaching: Teaching of classes in bioinformatics
    • Development: Evaluation of new tools and software, development of bioinformatics tools. Making tools accessible to users at (on www, central servers, ...)
    • Databases: Maintenance of existing in-house databases (such as genbank, SWISS-PROT, etc.)
    • Interface and collaborate with outside institutions: Interact with commercial and academic bioinformaticians in developing and sharing bioinformatic resources.
