Opportunity: Vacancy for RESEARCH ASSOCIATE in E-Science--Manchester (UK)

The Department of Computing Science invites applications for the above post within the EPSRC-funded Qurator project ("Describing the Quality of Curated e-Science Information Resources") available from 1 February 2004 for a period of 3 years. This project will investigate the feasibility of annotating e-science data resources with explicit descriptions of their quality. At present, information about the quality of e-science data is largely coarse-grained, anecdotal and based on out of date views of the fast moving e-science data landscape. Our goal in the Qurator project is to deliver Grid-based tools and techniques that allow scientists (and curators of scientific data) to formulate, maintain and manipulate fine-grained data quality descriptors as an integral part of the e-science process. The research will entail extensive collaboration with the second Qurator team at the University of Aberdeen, and with user-scientists from two domains of post-genomic biological science. Manchester's role in the project as a whole will focus on the definition of the formalism for modelling information quality criteria, as well as on the delivery of quality-based annotation and browsing tools. The successful candidate will therefore have skills in modelling application semantics, as well as experience in working with a modern high-level language (preferably Java). Experience in language design and/or the generation of code from high-level specifications of semantics will be an advantage, as will knowledge of Grid- and web-based technologies. Candidates should possess a good first degree in computer science or a related discipline, and should have some relevant postgraduate research experience, preferably a PhD. Starting salary will be in the range 18265 - 20311 pounds sterling p.a. (under review).
