Starting in Summer 2004, an 18 months-lasting Masters program in bioinformatics will be offered by the Center for Bioinformatics as a specialisation of the 3-year long Bachelor study program offered since fall 2001.

Meanwhile, study programs for bioinformatics have been introduced at a number of german universities. At the Center for Bioinformatics in Saarbrücken, research is strongly focussed on all aspects of drug design. This focus of the program also affects the areas of teaching of the Bachelor and Master studies, making the graduates very attractive for the pharmaceutical industry.

Saarland University has a world-wide reputation for its excellent education in computer science. Therefore, a solid foundation in computer science is the basis during the Bachelor studies in bioinformatics besides introductory lectures in natural sciences. During the first two semesters of the Masters study program, this education in computer science, bioinformatics and biotechnology will be deepened by specialized lecture courses and seminars bringing the students to the forefront of today's research in computational biology. All courses will be taught in English. In the third Semester, the students will complete a Master thesis in a current research area. Having completed their Masters degree, the graduates are well-positioned for taking up careers in companies. Alternatively, they qualify for PhD studies.

Admission to the Masters Studies is open to holders of a bachelor degree in bioinformatics or of an equivalent degree in a related subject. However, a dual education in mathematics/computer science and life sciences is required. We do not accept applications by pure computer scientists (please apply for our Master program in Computer Science instead) or by graduates of pure life sciences.

The maximum number of Masters students admitted is limited to 25 per year. Deadline for applications for the summer semester of 2004 is January 15, 2004.
