    Does some of the news regarding RedHat and SuSE Linux have you looking around for another distro? If so, you may want to consider BioBrew.

    BioBrew is an open source Linux distribution based on the NPACI Rocks [1] cluster software and enhanced for bioinformaticists and life scientists. While BioBrew looks, feels, and operates like ordinary Red Hat Linux, it includes popular cluster software, e.g. MPICH, LAM-MPI, PVM, Modules, PVFS, Myrinet GM, Sun Grid Engine, gcc, Ganglia, and Globus, and popular bioinformatics software, e.g. the NCBI toolkit, BLAST, mpiBLAST, HMMER, ClustalW, GROMACS, PHYLIP, WISE, FASTA, and EMBOSS. It will run on everything from notebook computers to large clusters. BioBrew for the x86 architecture is freely available for download (as ISO files) [2]. BioBrew for the Itanium architecture is available directly from Glen Otero, maintainer of the BioBrew distro.

    The initial release of BioBrew is v0.9, and your help is needed for testing. We encourage BioBrew users familiar with the included software packages to contact us with their experiences, problems, successes, and suggestions so that we can improve BioBrew.

    While the initial release of BioBrew has most of the clustering goodies that we would like, the pending v1.0 stands to be more impressive with VMI 2.0, LAM-MPI 7.0, Myrinet GM 2.0, and Infiniband support.
