DESCRIPTION
Our group is part of the Bioinformatics department at the
Biozentrum of the University of Basel which is a member of the Swiss
Institute of Bionformatics (maker of Swiss-Prot, Swiss Model,
T-coffee, Expasy, etc.). The research in our group centers on the
development of new mathematical and computational tools to analyze
large-scale biological data sets. Examples of research areas our
group focuses on are:
1) Inferring of transcription regulatory control circuits
using comparative genomic, expression, and footprint data.
2) Modeling genome evolution from comparative genomic data.
3) Scaling laws in genome and proteome content.
4) General methods for the discovery of functional motifs in DNA and RNA sequences.REQUIREMENTS
We are looking for PhD students and postdocs that are pursuing a
professional career in bioinformatics research and have a strong
desire to develop and implement novel mathematical and computational
tools in the above research areas. Requirements for the PhD and
postdoc positions are, respectively, a master's or PhD diploma in
mathematics, physics, computer science or biology. Postdoc candidates
should have a demonstrated ability to perform first rate research in
bioinformatics or a related field. Since most of the work in our group
involves advanced mathematical techniques, candidates with a
background in biology or computer science should have very strong
mathematical abilities. Candidates with a background in physics or
mathematics should have some familiarity with molecular biology and a
strong desire to learn in this area. Candidates should be able to
program in C or C++, and knowledge of Perl/Python and Java is desirable.HOW TO APPLY
