    BACKGROUND

    The Blueprint Initiative North America is a multi-year, fully funded,
    research program in the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. Our mission is to develop, populate, maintain and host the Biomolecular Interaction Network Database (BIND), a web based database and associated support databases and software tools. These tools and databases are used worldwide by researchers in over fifteen fields.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    This person will be part of the Blueprint IT and software development team and will be responsible for the timely delivery, support and administration of the SeqHound, BIND, MyMedLine and the Distributed Folding project databases. This position may require on-call services, as Blueprint is a 24/7/365 organization.

    Some specific projects and tasks:
    1. Become familiar with the various database systems especially SeqHound and its associated Application Programming Interface.
    2. Install and upgrade Database servers and related application tools.
    3. Performance, capacity and future requirements planning related to the database systems.
    4. Install, run and maintain programs to build and update each of the databases.
    5. Monitor and optimize the performance of databases.
    6. Document procedures for setting up, maintaining and optimizing each of the databases.
    7. Provide support to DBAs who are administering these same databases at external sites.
    8. Assist with the creation and modification of primary database storage structures (table spaces) and primary objects (tables, views, indices) in consultation with the Software Development team.
    9. Design and run benchmark tests to compare various backend databases (for example DB2 vs. MySQL vs. Oracle).
    10. Plan for backup and recovery of database information.
    11. Work with DB Application vendors to resolve technical problems as they occur.




    REQUIREMENTS

    We are seeking a Database Administrator possessing experience with MySQL. The ideal candidate should also have some expereince with IBM DB2 and Oracle. Qualified candidates should be self-motivated and service oriented. Candidates should have the necessary experience with all three products to perform the tasks described above and be comfortable working in a multi platform environment (Solaris, Linux, Microsoft Windows). The candidate should be a great team player, and possess good communication skills. In addition, the ideal candidate may have experience with one or more of the following: DB2 text information extender, DB2 XML extender, shell scripting PERL, C/C++Java database programming or bioinformatics.



    PREFERENCES

    The candidate must have recent, hands-on DBA experience.
    We are looking for candidates to fill a full-time position.
