    BACKGROUND:
    The biotech, pharmaceutical, and medical (BPM) industry, sometimes also referred to as the Life Sciences, produces products and provides services that relate to the analysis of biological data and the simulation of biological, diagnostic, therapeutic and prosthetic systems.

    This position focuses on a segment of the BPM industry: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.

    The explosive growth of data about genes, proteins, and drug molecules and their functions and interactions, necessitates efficient mathematical algorithms and software tools to extract meaning from that data. These algorithms and tools must be equally effective with raw data generated through gene sequencing, allele scoring, high-throughput screening assays, and expression array analysis. Bioinformatics scientists and developers worldwide rely on MATLAB to accelerate scientific discovery and reduce development time. Developers in bioinformatics value the open, component-based architecture of MATLAB, which lets them choose only the tools and extensions needed. In addition, they have direct access to toolbox source code and can easily modify existing functions and models or add custom functions.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The primary responsibility of this position is to assist sales personnel in managing the technical aspects of the sales process directed primarily at customers working on Computational Biology Applications. The Applications Engineer is responsible for demonstrating his/her knowledge during sales meetings, conference calls, through the delivery of public seminars, and in the development of complex product demonstrations. This position also requires that the Applications Engineer is able to work with existing 'power users' to answer their questions and assist them in the most efficient and proper use of MathWorks products once deployed.

    The MathWorks core software platforms, MATLAB and Simulink, provide a powerful technical computing and simulation environment. The integration of data analysis, algorithm development, visualization, and deployment is becoming essential for biotech and pharmaceutical companies competing in the global marketplace. The successful Computational Biology Applications Engineer will build on his/her experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry to understand and effectively communicate the benefits of MATLAB and Simulink's technical computing environment.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Providing technical pre-sales support and guidance to The MathWorks North American Sales Organization. Working as a team, the Applications Engineer assists the salesperson in understanding and synthesizing customer requirements, then explaining the features and capabilities of our products relative to the customer's specific needs.

    2. Preparing and delivering product presentations to customers and prospects. These are delivered during customer meetings and marketing seminars. These 'product-centric' sessions include, but are not limited to, live demonstrations of MATLAB, the Bioinformatics Toolbox, and related products.

    3. Developing demonstration programs, application examples, and simulations. These are generally used to clearly demonstrate how the capabilities of The MathWorks software address the concerns of our customers. These demonstrations may be used for sales visits, marketing seminars, or telephone/web customer support.

    4. Analyzing users' problems to recommend and demonstrate the best computational approach. Occasionally, customers who are preparing to acquire software require guidance on how to use evaluation products. This requires assisting customers with the use of MATLAB programs directed at solving specific problems. An Applications Engineer with a broad understanding across engineering disciplines is viewed as having exceptional value as The MathWorks customers span a broad range of industries, disciplines, and Applications.

    5. Accountability of project quality, timing and effort including the submission of trip or engagement reports as well as weekly activity reports.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    This person should possess an Engineering or Bioinformatics degree and have familiarity with or experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical area. Knowledge of (and enthusiasm for!) MATLAB is essential; experience with Simulink and additional MathWorks products (such as the Statistics Toolbox) is a plus.

    The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to perform computational analysis, modeling, and simulation tasks and be able to discuss how our products are used to solve engineering and business problems. A qualified candidate will be able to effectively communicate his/her passion for The MathWorks software to our customers. Candidates should be interested in working directly with customers to help them understand how to apply our products to their problems.

    Travel is generally throughout North America specific to various seminars, customer visits, etc. Though far less frequent, some international travel is expected. The candidate should expect to travel about 25-40% of the time with trips generally no longer than four days.
