    BACKGROUND

    The University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa, has established a bioinformatics group as part of the South African National Bioinformatics Network - an initiative to promote bioinformatics research and capacity development in South Africa. The bioinformatics group at UCT will be an active node of the National Bioinformatics Network and will be responsible for the establishment of an independent program of research in bioinformatics at UCT as well as contributing towards the educational and general bioinformatics needs at the university.

    We invite applications for a renewable two-year contract position as manager of the Node.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    A primary responsibility of the post will be to contribute to bioinformatics training and curriculum development at UCT, as well as managing the activities of the UCT Node of the South African National Bioinformatics Network. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to initiate or contribute to bioinformatics research at UCT, either independently or in collaboration with other researchers.

    REQUIREMENTS

    We seek a highly motivated and adaptable individual, capable of performing a wide range of tasks including bioinformatics training, user-support and service management as well as some research. Applicants should have a post-graduate degree, preferably a PhD, in bioinformatics or a related field. Candidates should possess good computational skills, including knowledge of at least one modern programming language, and a willingness to learn additional skills rapidly.

    COMPENSATION

    The annual remuneration package will be up to a level of R300,000, depending on qualification and experience.
