    BACKGROUND:
    The National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) is a partnership comprising the main cancer research funding bodies. It was formally established in April 2001 with the purpose of streamlining and accelerating the advancement of cancer research in the UK. The NCRI have set up an NCRI Informatics Co-ordination Unit to:
    • Develop a national strategy for cancer research informatics
    • Provide specialised co-ordination between different cancer research informatics groups
    • Gather information on ongoing activities
    • Develop a national network of those responsible for cancer research informatics
    We are now seeking to appoint 2 new Programme Managers to join the Unit.

    Informatics Training
    This post will undertake a review of the informatics training currently available in relation to cancer science and medicine and will be based in central London. Liaison between NCRI, NTRAC and NCTR

    The other post will undertake a review of the informatics infrastructure currently available in relation to cancer science and medicine and act as liaison with the NCRI National Cancer Tissue Resource (NCTR) and the National Translational Cancer Research Network (NTRAC).This post will be based in London and Oxford.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Candidates for both posts should have a PhD, an interest in cancer research and/or software engineering and a strong interest in informatics.

    A self-motivated, confident communicator, both orally and in writing, you should be capable of presenting and analysing sometimes complex information.You will have a broad working knowledge of cancer science and medicine and will ideally have experience in an administrative environment.You will also have the analytical and communication skills necessary to handle the complex administrative aspects of research administration. Practical experience in the application of informatics and web-enablement is not essential but would be an advantage.

    This is an exciting opportunity for the right person to be part of a major new development in cancer informatics. The positions offer a wide variety of experience for someone seeking to pursue a research management career. The informatics training review post is a 3-year contract. The NCTR, NCRI, NTRAC liaison post is an 18-month contract in the first instance.
