BACKGROUND
Emory University is seeking an individual who is experienced in UNIX system administration issues directly related to the support of life scientists and bioinformatics applications.RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans and implements UNIX installations (Solaris and Linux) ,associated utilities, and related software to meet bioinformatics/research needs. Will be responsible for applications on dedicated UNIX servers. Ensures the availability, integrity and reliability of assigned systems. As part of a
research administration team, the successful candidate installs, configures, and maintains research UNIX (Solaris and Linux) servers. He/she detects, diagnoses, and resolves issues associated with server hardware and operating system software; insures smooth operation of systems and security integrity; meets with researchers to plan storage and performance strategies to enable optimal application of research software tools.
Candidates must: demonstrate ability with most aspects of operating system administration including:
- System installation ,upgrades, and patch management
- UNIX startup/shutdown procedures (boot process, rc scripts, init, PROM commands)
- Backups and restores (preferably using a tool such as Solstice Backup)
- Network configuration (NFS, Samba, DNS, services and ports)
- Install and maintain opensource apps such as Apache, MySQL
- Knowledge of security and firewall tools (iptables, tcpwrappers, firewall devices)
- Paging and swapping
- Interprocess communication and load management
- Device file management
- Filesystem concepts (inodes, logging filesystems, creating logical partitions)
- Volume management (Solstice DiskSuite, Linux md)
- RAID concepts and how they are used to improve reliability and performance
- Is able to use Perl, bash ,ksh to write programs to summarize system activity data
- Can use "Make" to build and install third party packages
- Practical knowledge of the GNU suite of opensource tools
- Has completed a significant programming project in C,C++,or Java
- Can install MySQL and Oracle
- Knows how to perform clean startup/shutdown of databases
REQUIREMENTS
Five years of operating systems analysis/administration experience OR a bachelor's degree and three years of operating systems analysis/administration experience.PREFERENCES
Experience with bioinformatics tools and concepts (BLAST, clustalw, alignments tools, etc) a definite plus. Knowledge of general biological concepts a plus.HOW TO APPLY
