DESCRIPTION
Two post-doctoral research associate positions, one in bioinformatics and one in computer science. Available in the Departments of Biomolecular Sciences (UMIST) & Computer Science (University of Manchester), as part of the ISPIDER Integrative Proteomics ProjectBACKGROUND
ISPIDER (In Silico Proteome Integrated Data Environment Resource) is a multi-centre BBSRC-funded Bioinformatics and e-Science grant to UMIST/Manchester, UCL/Birkbeck in London, and the EBI in Hinxton to develop a pilot grid for proteome informatics. This will involve development of fundamental, underlying software infrastructure and proteome-specific databases, through to clients and applications, all of which are targeted at integration of proteomic data in all its forms for the advancement of biological discovery. This will include protein sequence and annotation information, gel and mass spectrometric data, and 3D structural and functional information.LOCALE
UMIST/Manchester departments provide a 5* working environment in bioinformatics, and have been leading the way in many aspects of proteomics and allied bioinformatics, developing data standards and tools such as PEDRo (pedro.man.ac.uk) and pepmapper. This involves collaborations between several groups in the Biomolecular Sciences at UMIST (Hubbard, Gaskell) and Biological Sciences (Oliver) and Computer Sciences (Paton) at Manchester. In addition, Computer Science (Goble, Stevens, Embury) provides international excellence in e-Science and data integration via such projects as myGrid. The successful applicants will work with these internationally recognised teams to develop the ISPIDER proteome BioGrid.RESPONSIBILITIES
Two posts are available. POST 1. Ref no. BMS/CV/109 The applicant will be involved in the development of fundamental ISPIDER grid infrastructure to enable integration of proteomics data and databases. This will involve exploitation of data integration services, such as workflow enactment and distributed query services developed under the myGrid project (http://www.mygrid.org.uk). POST 2. Ref. No. BMS/CV/110 The applicant will develop a proteome identification server and database, to be linked to the ISPIDER grid, as well as bespoke proteome databases. This will build on existing expertise in development of proteome protein identification software.
Both posts will involve interactions with other groups involved in the ISPIDER project at UCL/Birkbeck and at the EBI in Hinxton.REQUIREMENTS
The successful applicants will have a graduate degree in a relevant area, such as bioinformatics or computer science, and ideally, post-graduate experience in bioinformatics. They will enjoy working as part of a multi-disciplinary informatics project team. Experience of one or more programming languages such as Perl, Python, Java, or C/C++ is desirable. The two posts are available from 1st August, initially for one year extendable up to 3 years. Starting salary for both posts will be at spine point 10 on the RA1A scale (£24,951).HOW TO APPLY
Informal enquires should be directed to (post 1) Dr. Suzanne Embury (Email: embury[at]cs.man.ac.uk) or (post 2) Dr. Simon Hubbard (Email: simon.hubbard[at]umist.ac.uk). Full applications, comprising a full CV and contact details for at least 2 referees should be sent to Dr. Simon Hubbard, Department of Biomolecular Sciences, PO Box 88, Manchester, M60 1QD, UK. Please quote appropriate reference number.DEADLINE
Closing date for applications: 28th July 2004.
