DESCRIPTION
DEADLINE 15th September, http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~ela/PhDAdd2004.html
E-Science Visualisation for Functional Genomics and Drug Target Discovery
This studentship will develop new metaphors for large-scale data visualisation in functional genomics. The student will identify the best ways of presenting and interacting with data, and define a software architecture to support the construction of enhanced scientific visualisations. At the same time, algorithms will be developed to enable flexible data navigation, based on data reduction techniques. The work would first involve an in-depth user study of current tools, a comparison with visualisation research in other domains, and the development of a deeper understanding of the system features that enhance biomedical research. It would then propose a classification of known visualisation techniques in this area and draw conclusions about the most effective visualisations. The student would then focus on data reduction algorithms used in the selected types of visualisations, and produce a design and a prototype a complex application combining various types of visualisation, which uses the GRID infrastructure. This system would be tested with the users, and evaluated with regard to functionality and usability.DETAILS
This studentship can only be offered to EU citizens. The stipend will be £10,500 in the first year, and is expected to increase in the following years.
