Bioinformatics Post-doctoral Positions at University of Toronto, Canada

One or more post-doctoral positions will be available in 2005 in a newly established bioinformatics group at University of Toronto (http://www.utoronto.ca). The group, headed by Prof. Zhaolei Zhang, is in the Banting and Best Dept. of Medical Research (BBDMR, http://www.utoronto.ca/bandb/). We will move into the brand new Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research (http://ccbr.med.utoronto.ca) in Spring 2005.

BACKGROUND

University of Toronto and affiliated research institutes is one of the largest and most active biomedical research communities in the world. BBDMR is a well-funded institute with state-of-the-art equipment and generous resources. Computational biologists will have chance to constantly interact and collaborate with experimentalists who are leaders in the fields of proteomics, functional genomics and gene expression. We are also part of the university wide Program in Proteomics and Bioinformatics (http://p-b.med.utoronto.ca). Toronto, voted ?one of the most livable city in the world?, is famous for its immense culturally- and ethnically-diverse communities.

PROJECTS

We are interested in the following general areas. (1) Evolutionary bioinformatics and comparative genomics. We are interested in prediction and annotation of genes, intergenic sequences and regulatory motifs using comparative and evolutionary approaches. (2) Analysis of biological networks and metabolic pathways: predicting protein interactions in silico, data mining and databases, modeling and simulations. (3) Other general topics in bioinformatics. Candidates will also have the freedom in exploring his/her own interests.

REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for highly motivated and innovative individuals with background in bioinformatics and computational biology, defined loosely. Candidates who have strong quantitative background (mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics etc) are also welcome to apply. Candidates from the fields of molecular evolution, statistical genetics are also encouraged to apply. Successful candidates should have good programming skills. Research experience in statistical inference, machine learning and computer simulation is a plus.

COMPENSATION

Salary will commensurate with experience and qualification. Post-doctoral fellow and family members are eligible for Canada?s universal health care system and other social benefits.
