    BACKGROUND

    The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is an interdisciplinary research and training center of the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, with state-of-the-art technology platforms in functional genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics.
    The successful applicant will supplement the core bioinformatics staff of the FGCZ and collaborate with a broad range of external experts of the University and ETH Zurich in the fields of informatics and life sciences. He/She will have access to the latest generation of computing infrastructure of both institutions.

    The position offers a challenging opportunity at a key intersection of rapidly moving fields including a competitive salary and relocation reimbursement.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The experts task will be to continue implementation of an information management system to process diverse collections of data sets from the FGCZ transcriptomics and proteomics technology platforms.
    Description of the FGCZ IT infrastructure
    • All instruments are controlled by software running on dedicated PCs; the FGCZ is developing a life science content management system for the generated data based on open source projects
    • FGCZ maintains a total number of around 200 servers and PCs offering a wide range of services
    • Server access a multi-Terabyte SAN with Tivoli backup
    • Large number of services, including Windows and Linux application servers, remote and local file access, etc. is supported
    • Shares on a computer cluster featuring AMD Opteron technology
    • IT is managed by dedicated staff

    REQUIREMENTS

    The ideal candidate should have a degree in computational, technical sciences. Advanced biological knowledge would be an asset . An ability to work independently is a prerequisite, as is the ability to effectively interact with the research and technical staff of the center and of research groups from University and ETH Zurich in a team-oriented manner.

    Candidate Profile:
    • Professional knowledge of standard programming languages: major programming language is Java, but the other standard languages are also required (C, C++, Perl, tcl, etc.)
    • Experience with the major operating systems: Linux, Windows and some Mac OS X
    • Profound understanding of database systems: the FGCZ has installations from Oracle, MySQL, SQL server, postgres, db2, etc.
    • Practical experience in the design and development of multi-tier applications
    • Quick understanding of existing systems, some open source, some commercial

    Full-time employment, starting immediately or upon agreement

    COMPENSATION

    Financing and employment conditions for this position are according to the guidelines of the ETH Zurich. The successful candidate will be employed by the ETH Zurich.
