IBM's Blue Gene/L, designed to predict protein structures, is now the world's fastest, according to internal tests done by IBM. With a benchmark of 36.01 TFLOPS, the Blue Gene/L edged out the 35.86 TFLOPS NEC Earth Simulator, currently number one on the TOP500 list. The IBM supercomputer uses ASIC chips (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) and runs the GNU/Linux operating system.
