    Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS SPECIALIST--Los Angeles, CA (US)

    INTRODUCTION

    The Norris Medical Library of the University of Southern California is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and service-oriented individual to serve as a Bioinformatics Specialist. Reporting to the Associate Director for Educational and Research Services, the Bioinformatics Specialist provides educational and consulting support for faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and researchers in the USC scientific community. The Norris Medical Library, located on the University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus, adjoining the LAC+USC Healthcare Network, the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, and the Institute for Genetic Medicine, is four miles from downtown Los Angeles and seven miles from the University Park Campus. The library contains 168,185 volumes and receives 1,935 current periodicals. Users include medical, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy students, graduate students in the biomedical and biological sciences, 1,230 full-time faculty, and a large number of other health professionals.     RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Developing and conducting a broad-based educational program related to the proper selection and use of bioinformatics resources and databases.
    • Providing consulting services and training for individuals, departments, and research teams regarding the effective application of bioinformatics tools for specific research problems or for assisting researchers in visualizing, analyzing, manipulating, and/or interpreting molecular data.
    • Maintaining a current awareness of newly developed databases and resources and developing innovative approaches to disseminating this information.
    • Developing and maintaining a web site to promote and support the use of bioinformatics resources available and for keeping researchers aware of new developments in bioinformatics and biocomputing.
    REQUIREMENTS:
    Required: A Master's degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry or an equivalent field with at least three years of relevant experience. Demonstrated initiative. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Extensive familiarity with genomic and proteomic databases, and 3D macromolecular structure data and other databases as well as with a variety of software tools for manipulation and analyses of these data. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

    Preferred: Ph.D. Experience in classroom teaching and/or development of training materials. Familiarity with computer programming.

    SALARY/STATUS

    From $65,000 to $80,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Appointment made on an annual basis with future funding dependent upon successful evaluation of the program and availability of funding.
