The new Top500 supercomputer list for November places two GNU/Linux systems at the top of the list, ahead of the previous champion, NEC's Earth Simulator:

#1 IBM/DOE's BlueGene/L
Rmax = 70,720 GFlops
Rpeak = 91,750 GFlops

#2 SGI/NAR's Columbia
Rmax = 51,870 GFlops
Rpeak = 60,960 GFlops

And, of course, BlueGene/L is a bioinformatics computer.

In fact, 296 of the 500 fastest computers in the world run Linux. Quite a vindication for what Microsoft called a hobbyist's operating system.
