    BACKGROUND

    Northwest Nazarene University?s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Computer Science (CS), as well as several options for a CS minor. The BS degree in computer science prepares a student for further study in CS or other information technology (IT) fields, such as information security, artificial intelligence, robotics, etc. The BS, BA, and to a lesser extent, the CS minor prepare students for IT careers in science, business, or industry, such as software developers (programmers), network engineers, database analysts, etc. We wish to add a bioinformatics application to our degree.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    NNU?s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science seeks applications for a full-time faculty position of Professor of Computer Science to begin in the fall, 2005. The candidate will teach CS courses (half-time) for majors and others, take part in appropriate committee assignments and develop a research program in the area of bioinformatics. The area of research and research support must fit into the parameters of an NIH INBRE grant that will cover the salary and research expenses of this position for four years. The grant also provides start up money.

    REQUIREMENTS

    An earned doctorate in a subject relevant to bioinformatics (such as bioinformatics, computer science, engineering or scientific computing) is preferred. We will consider a person near the end of their doctoral program. A successful candidate needs to demonstrate the ability to carry out a research program in bioinformatics that fits within the parameters of the NIH INBRE grant. Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with research and technical staff and students, as well as the ability to work independently with minimal guidance are important.

    PREFERENCES

    • Knowledge of operating systems (Unix, Linux, XP, etc.)
    • Knowledge of software development (C++, Java, NET, etc)
    • Knowledge of data bases and other applications in Linux and Windows
    • Teaching experience at the college level (preferably undergraduate)
    • Knowledge of molecular genetics
    • Knowledge of biologic/genetic databases and search analysis tools (BLAST, etc.)

    LOCALE

    Northwest Nazarene University (NNU), a comprehensive university with a rich liberal arts tradition, is located in Nampa, Idaho.     COMPENSATION

    Salary will be determined by the educational background and experience of each applicant. Full-time faculty will be offered a benefits package including health insurance for faculty and family, life and disability insurance, opportunities for faculty development, sabbatical experiences, and a retirement program.
