    "Most people in the UK have deep concerns about the lack of controls on the handling of genetic information, and whom to trust, including scientists, according to a new survey. These findings are announced as a new public consultation gets underway to decide what protections should be put in place to prevent unfair discrimination or exploitation.

    The newly formed Human Genetics Commission (HGC) is launching the consultation on 27 November. The results will help shape advice to government ministers in the New Year on the likely impact of human genetics on human health, the ethical and legal implications of genetics, provision of genetic services by the National Health Service, and research priorities.

    The need to inform and gain opinion from the public is now seen as vital for maintaining trust. "It's no good experts giving guidance if they don't know how the public feel about it," said HGC member and geneticist Philip Webb, also trustee of the Genetic Interest Group, representing families affected by genetic diseases."
