    DESCRIPTION

This is a 3 year Studentship in the UK only open to UK and EEA nationals. For details of eligibility criteria visit this site:
    http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/training/eligibility.pdf

The Bioinformatics group at Rothamsted Research has developed a database integration and text mining system called ONDEX which uses a combination of graph based methods and generalized data structures. This system is designed to support and complement different bioinformatics applications and research activities such as microarray analysis, sequence analysis and modelling/simulation of biological systems. The successful applicant will be introduced to the development and scientific applications of several key aspects in ONDEX, and thus develop a high level of expertise in the integration of biological databases and in bioinformatics in general.

    REQUIREMENTS:
We anticipate that the successful candidate will have a first degree in computer science or in bioinformatics. The student will receive training both at Rothamsted Research and at Imperial College (London), partly through courses, and partly through his supervisors whilst working on the PhD project.
Besides principles and methods in database integration, data analysis and visualisation, it is expected that the student will acquire excellent programming skills in a wide range of programming skills (Java, SQL, shell scripting) and software development tools (Eclipse, Unit testing, software versioning systems and release management, UML). As a result, the student will develop a high level of expertise in all aspects of software development.
