"In light of the free-fall of the biotech/pharm and computer/software-laden NASDAQ market, it's interesting to note how companies on either side of the tech/healthcare continuum are reacting. This week, Merck & Co. announced a venture that will invest $100 million in "new technology" (read: Internet) life science firms (see related article). Now, IBM Inc. (Armonk, NY) has made its first equity investment in a life sciences company. IBM is betting that Structural Bioinformatics Inc.'s (SBI; San Diego) 3D protein models will help drug discovery scientists develop new drugs faster and at lower cost.
The partners hope to make SBI's databases of protein structural information more readily accessible to researchers worldwide through the Internet on a subscription basis. SBI will draw on IBM's expertise in computational biology. Joint marketing efforts are also planned.
According to the latest estimates, new drugs take up to 15 years to bring to market, at a cost in the $500 million range."
