The aim of the project is to develop a computational model of the gibberellin biosynthetic pathway and its regulatory framework in Arabidopsis, to incorporate data on the expression of the biosynthetic genes and potential regulatory transcription factors, and to test the model using transgenic and mutant lines of Arabidopsis.

REQUIREMENTS

We anticipate that the successful candidate will have a Bachelors degree either in computer science/computational biology/bioinformatics (some practical laboratory experience would be an advantage though not a prerequisite), or in biology with programming skills equivalent to a Masters degree in IT or bioinformatics. The student will receive training both at Rothamsted Research and at the University of Nottingham, partly through courses, and partly by direct supervision whilst working on the PhD project.
On the computational side of the project, it is expected that the student will acquire excellent programming skills in a wide range of programming skills (Java, SQL, shell scripting) and software development tools (Eclipse, Unit testing, software versioning systems and release management, UML). As a result, the student will develop a high level of expertise in all aspects of software development. Further, the student will learn to work on high performance computers, which will in the near future also include a medium sized computer cluster. These computational skills will enable the student to simulate and validate biological systems, as well as developing the transcription factor analysis tools and methods.
