    BACKGROUND

    The National Bioenergy Center and the Basic Science Center at NREL are world leaders in the characterization and development of biocatalysts involved in the production of renewable fuels. This bioinformaticist opening is a new position in the National Bioenergy Center. The successful candidate will be well positioned to collaborate with research teams in both of these centers, as well as the Computational Science Center and the newly established Genomics and Proteomics Laboratory at NREL.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Work with research staff in the National Bioenergy Center to direct the development and application of bioinformatics tools necessary to establish a world-class genomics and proteomics facility at NREL. Establish the infrastructure for NREL in several bioinformatics disciplines to support a group of approximately 25 biologists focused on the identification and improvement of enzyme and microbial biocatalysts for the conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals. Collect and assemble data for gene expression profiling (microarray), genome annotation, structural bioinformatics, and proteome analysis. Combine the use of modern experimental and computational approaches in genomics and proteomics to address the development of advanced biocatalysts. Oversee the construction, population, and maintenance of databases in support of NREL?s public and proprietary efforts. Evaluate and develop new and advanced bioinformatics tools and software, making them accessible to internal and external users. The candidate will be expected to develop a core bioinformatics activity initially funded by existing sources and later transitioning to new external sources.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Doctorate degree in biological or computation science or equivalent relevant experience. Twelve years of relevant work experience in bioinformatics. Outstanding interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills working in a team environment. Previous collaboration with biological scientists supporting the use of databases and tools. The candidate should have an in-depth appreciation of the newest genetic and molecular tools. Demonstration of successful operations within an infrastructure collecting and utilizing multiple large data set methodologies to study physiology. The ability to generate such a system at NREL for use with public and proprietary data sets. A facility with the appropriate scientific programming in the area of genomics; specifically, the ability to support transcriptional profiling, metabolite profiling, and the integration of the datasets.

    PREFERENCES

    Experience in integrating large data sets from multiple analyses into metabolic sense. A working knowledge of microbial physiology, as well as experience in developing and utilizing data-mining techniques, algorithm development and statistical analysis. The candidate should have a track record demonstrating the ability to be self-motivated and self-directing, to develop realistic project plans with timelines, and to solve problems using application of scientific theory.
