    First J. Craig Venter leaves, and now Celera Genomics decides to donate its genome data to NCBI. Stephen Manning of the Associated Press reports on this change of heart at a company that, to us, once represented all things closed:

    ``After years of selling subscriptions to view the human genetic code, Celera Genomics Corp. has reversed course and will donate much of its work on the `Book of Life' to a government agency that will make it available for free.

    ``The move resolves a major difference of opinion between Celera and the publicly funded Human Genome Project ? both of which mapped the human genome five years ago.

    ``Although the public project has always made its work available at no charge on the Internet, Celera charged fees that reportedly ran into the millions of dollars. On Tuesday, Celera said it was discontinuing its subscription business while continuing efforts to make drugs.''
