    DESCRIPTION

    Postdoc and grad student positions are immediately available as part of a NIH-funded international four year effort to develop a systemic approach to modeling, capturing, analyzing and disseminating flow cytometry data. Positions are at the new $95 million BC Cancer Research Centre (http://www.bccrc.ca) in Vancouver, Canada (http://www.tourismvancouver.com).

    Initial work will be focused on developing a community-based standard for recording and reporting flow cytometry data. Software implementations of this standard (UML, XML, SQL, Java) and an ontology are being created to facilitate data exchange between both software components and collaborative groups. Statistics packages (R) are also being developed to allow users to implement analyses in a high throughput fashion, as well as exchange these analyses in more meaningful ways then are currently available. When completed, this project will have generated a complementary series of web and desktop based bioinformatics tools that will support efficient and informative flow cytometry data storage, representation, analysis and dissemination and will facilitate research in human disease areas such as cancer and HIV/AIDS that depends on this technique.

Please note that departmental regulations stipulate that all applicants for a graduate student position must have completed a B.Sc. with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and have a TOEFL score greater than 600 (250 for the computer adapted test) or equivalent use of English. Salary is approximately $42,500 plus benefits for postdoctoral candidates and graduate students will receive a $19,500 stipend. Both positions also include travel stipends.
