PRESS RELEASE: Bioinformatics.Org adds new members to Board

The Bioinformatics Organization, Inc. (a.k.a. Bioinformatics.Org) announces the appointment of two new members to its Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors of the Bioinformatics Organization elected Paul Stothard, Ph.D. and Damian Counsell to the Board at the Annual Meeting last week. Paul Stothard received his Ph.D. in molecular biology and genetics from the University of Alberta, Canada in 2002. He now works as a bioinformaticist for Genome Canada, providing custom software for several large projects. He developed the Sequence Manipulation Suite (http://bioinformatics.org/sms2/), a popular bioinformatics resource at Bioinformatics.Org, and is developing an Open Source bacterial genome viewer called CGView (http://wishart.biology.ualberta.ca/cgview/).

Damian Counsell studied physiological sciences at Oxford University and then physical science and engineering in medicine at Imperial College, London University. He is the author of the Bioinformatics FAQ (http://bioinformatics.org/faq/), the largest FAQ about the field in general, mirrored at many locations. He also works on the structural bioinformatics of proteins at the UK Medical Research Council, Human Genome Mapping Project Resource Centre near Cambridge.

The term for directors is indefinite, and they have legal voting power within the Organization, which is incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, USA. Eight other directors serve on the Board: J.W. Bizzaro, M.Sc. (chairman); Marcos Oliveira de Carvalho; Yevgeny Ioffe, M.Sc.; Martin Kucej, Ph.D.; Mark Luo, M.Sc.; Peter D. St. Onge, M.Sc.; Jon K. Stewart, J.D.; and Gary H. Van Domselaar, Ph.D.
