BI.O: Organizational Changes

Happy New Year from all of us at Bioinformatics.org, as we begin our fourth year of service to the bioinformatics community.

We are aware that there must be some confusion about our name. Are we "Bioinformatics.org," "The Open Lab," or both? Well, we did spend some time as "The Open Lab," focusing primarily on project hosting, but that name wasn't very descriptive. Specifically, it didn't say that we were involved in bioinformatics. We needed a better name, so we prepended "Bioinformatics.org."

Over the next year, however, we would like to considerably expand our services. We want to create an extensive registry of open-source software for bioinformatics, whether or not the program development is hosted by us. We also want to create a Yahoo!-style directory for every site on the Internet that either provides a free (bioinformatics) service or promotes the freedom of information. There are many other projects in the works too, including some educational ones, like an integrated, cross-linked glossary of bioinformatics terms.

So, our plan is to use the name "The Open Lab" to describe just the project hosting system (which, by the way, is a modified version of SourceForge), and the organization will be known only as "Bioinformatics.org" (abbreviated as "BI.O"). We will also make some major renovations to the website, including the appearance.

Of course, we need help to make all of our goals a reality. Bioinformatics.org is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization. We rely on donations of time and equipment. If you have either to offer, please contact us at directors[at]bioinformatics.org.
