BioMed Central writes that they have just received the first impact factor for BMC Bioinformatics, an open-access journal in the field: 5.42.

``With this new impact factor, BMC Bioinformatics has reinforced its reputation as one of the top journals in its field. Launched in 2000, it is the second highest ranked bioinformatics journal, and already has an impact factor comparable to that of Bioinformatics (5.74), the most established journal in the field, which has been publishing for more than two decades [also under the name CABIOS] and is supported by a major society. We are delighted with this result, and hope that you share our confidence that the journal is now a credible competitor within the field.''
