BACKGROUND

PostDoc position at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam for the duration of 1.5 years starting by the end of 2005, in the context of the Horizon Breakthrough projects programme (http://www.genomics.nl/homepage/research/funding_opportunities/horizon/).

TITLE

IT-proteomics: Informatics Tool for Proteomic Biomarker Detection using large-scale nanoLC-FT Mass Spectrometry Data

GOAL

The goal of this project is to design and implement an informatics tool for tumor biomarker detection with large-scale LC-MS data. The tool will be based on machine learning algorithms incorporating new feature selection, classification and ensemble techniques based on support vector machines.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The PostDoc will work in close collaboration with an inter-disciplinary team of experts from the department of Biology and VUMC-Cancer Center Amsterdam (Dr. Connie Jimenez), department of Statistics (Prof.Dr. Aad van der Vaart), and department of Computer Science (Dr. Elena Marchiori, project leader).

REQUIREMENTS

The candidate for the postdoc position is expected to have a PhD in computer science or mathematics, with a strong background in data analysis and programming skills in C++ and Matlab. Project management skills, teamwork and leadership, as well as the ability to work effectively with academic colleagues, are all important qualifications for this position.

PREFERENCES

Familiarity with machine learning techniques for classification, in particular support vector machines, is preferred but not required.

TERMS:
1.5 year contract

COMPENSATION:
PostDoc salary depends on the senior status of the applicant, in accordance to the standards of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
