SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMMER

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF POSITION
The successful applicant will actively participate with other members of the Bioinformatics team to design and implement sample tracking and management tools as part of a custom Laboratory Information Management System. A challenging focus will be to integrate sample tracking and control with robotic automation. Other duties of the position will include providing assistance to staff members in troubleshooting software and engineering issues. Development or enhancement of existing relational database and web-based interactive tools will be required as well.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
At least three years of programming experience, including:

· At least two years experience programming with Java or C++ object-oriented programming
· At least two years experience programming with Perl & CGI
· At least two years experience with relational database development
· Experience developing and deploying applications on a UNIX platform

DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
· Proficient knowledge of Solaris, Macintosh and Windows operating systems
· Familiarity with Oracle DB querying using DBI and SQL Plus
· Familiarity with robotic workstations, including visual basic programming
· Prior use of JBuilder, Ant and Versioning Control software (CVS) in a multi-user environment
· Programming support on bioinformatics projects
· Web page development compatible with Netscape, Firefox, Safari and Explorer
· Practical experience in sample tracking and flow control in a molecular biology laboratory

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
· Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Must possess the ability to work independently with little direct supervision in a multi-tasking environment
· Must possess the willingness and ability to work in a team environment consisting of both programmers and scientists
· Must be well-organized and possess experience in writing formal documentation

EDUCATION/TRAINING/CERTIFICATIONS
· B.S. in Computer Science or related field required
· Background in the biological sciences or bioinformatics is strongly preferred
