    RESPONSIBILITIES

Position 1. Genomic studies of speciation and reproductive isolation in the evolutionary model plant genus Mimulus. The postdoc would take primary responsibility for integrating genetic and physical mapping data being produced by a number of different collaborators with a whole genome sequence, EST and polymorphism data being generated at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (see http://mimulusevolution.org)
Position 2. Development of methods for the study of chromosomal and gene family evolution in eukaryotic nuclear genomes, with particular application to plants (see http://www.phytome.org)

    REQUIREMENTS

A PhD in biology, computer science, statistics or related field. For both positions, the applicant should have several years of programming experience (Perl/C++). For the first, the applicant should have experience in the analysis of genetic and physical mapping data. For the second, experience with machine learning techniques (eg HMMs) and/or Bayesian inference is needed.

    TERMS

Both positions would initially be for 18 months with possible extension. Applicants should be able to start before Jan 1, 2006.

    LOCALE

UNC, plus nearby Duke and NC State Universities, collectively host a vibrant community of plant molecular biology and evolutionary genetics researchers, and is home to the new National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (http://www.nescent.org).
