Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Manager--Seattle, WA (US)

BACKGROUND:
Nearly 200 scientists and staff members strive to combat global infectious disease each day at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (SBRI). By combining science and imagination, it is our goal to conquer the diseases such as malaria, and HIV that are responsible for the majority of deaths worldwide. SBRI is an independent, non-profit research institute that is affiliated with the University of Washington. SBRI occupies a brand new research facility that is in a fast developing biotechnology hub in the South Lake Union area.

A Bioinformatics Manager position is available with a project that will use a combination of proteomics, micro-array, and bioinformatics tools to conduct research in the field of malaria vaccine development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Bioinformatics Manager will supervise one or more bioinformatics programmers, providing high-level architectural guidance in the design of web-based applications for data entry and computation. Working with the Principal Investigator, lab personnel, and Institute IT department, the Bioinformatics Manager will design web-based applications and data interchange tools to support project requirements. Excellent organizational and communication skills are crucial.

REQUIREMENTS:
Ph.D. or equivalent from an accredited institution PLUS two years of programming experience OR an advanced degree or postdoctoral training with a strong emphasis on bioinformatics.

PREFERENCES:
Previous experience as a manager or team lead for bioinformatics projects is strongly preferred. Requires in-depth knowledge of MS SQL Server 2000 or other mainstream relational DBMS, familiarity with the SQL query language and demonstrated knowledge of data modeling/normalization techniques. Experience is required in one or more programming languages: Java, C, Perl, or ASP.Net, particularly as applied to bioinformatics applications. Minimum three years' experience managing life sciences applications and databases in a clinical or research laboratory setting. Experience using statistical methods and tools such as such as t-test, ANOVA, clustering and hypothesis test is highly desirable.

Selected candidate will develop platforms and approaches to integrate functional genomics studies on different malaria parasite species, oversee bioinformatics activities for a research program, develop his/her own projects, assist the Principal Investigator with the development of the overall research program, and bring creativity and new ideas to current research projects.
