BACKGROUND

Within a Dutch funded Bioinformatics research project, running for 4 years, we are exploring new ways to develop a comparative genomics database for applications in pharmaceutical, nutritional and agricultural industry as well as in a pure academic environment. The goal of the project is to use all relevant protein and related genome wide information based on phylogenetic relation ships for a better understanding of (model) organisms and their use life sciences. We will use a frequently updated pairwise comparison set (Smith-Waterman based) as our repository. The aim is to use most well established (protein) knowledge resources and comparative genomic tools and to seek for overlap and differences to build a comprehensive integrated database and tool set.
The academic project is running from 4 major universities in the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Wageningen, Leiden, and Nijmegen) and involves 2 large companies (NV Organon and NIZO) in collaboration with Oracle the Netherlands and will be tightly integrated with other projects from an initiatiative called Biorange (please visit http://www.bioasp.nl or http://www.nbic.nl)

RESPONSIBILITIES

Within a large national project of the Dutch bioinformatics centre (NBIC) you will be responsible of research and development of new ways to build a comprehensive comparative genome database and tools

REQUIREMENTS

A PhD in either one of these fields: bioinformatics, genomics, genetics, molecular biology. If no PhD in a computational field the applicant should have demonstrated experience in programming languages and/or HPC usage.

PREFERENCES

A highly motivated, independend researcher demonstrated by peer reviewed research papers who can work in a larger team. He or she should be fluent in English and/or Dutch

LOCALE

You will be stationed at NV Organon (Oss, the Netherlands) but will also spent time at the CMBI, University of Nijmegen and Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
