BACKGROUND

The group of Computational Neurobiology (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/compneur/) develop models of neuronal function at various levels based on the precise knowledge of molecule functions and interactions. In addition, it is involved in several international projects in Structural Genomics and Systems Biology.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The group is searching for a software and database engineer to develop and maintain its computing resources (applications and databases). In particular the individual will be a key player of the BioModels Database and the forthcoming Systems Biology Ontology. Although group members are all skilled bioinformaticians, he/she is expected to help them in their daily work, and to be the main interface with system administration team.

REQUIREMENTS

You are an advanced computer scientist with at least a Master Degree in computing science and already a work experience. Although not required, a familiarity with life science topics would be a plus. You already worked in a team, preferably as a driving force. You are able to work on your own, to set-up priorities, and to organize your schedule in order to meet deadlines. Although full of initiative, you understand what risk management is, and are able to differentiate between cutting-edge and immature technologies

As the support of a whole team, you will have to interact with very different individuals. Therefore you are expected to defend your points of view, to advise and help people to make the most of the existing technology, but also to listen to their concerns and be ready to bend your approaches to cope with theirs.

You are an expert JAVA developer, proficient in all the aspects of the development in this language, whether for standalone applications or servers (in particular JSP). XML technologies are your bread and butter and you master XML schema, XSLT, etc, but also WebServices and SOAP. Of course, web programming (XHTML, CSS, Javascript) is a requirement. Knowledge of MySQL is a plus.

TERMS

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the
successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances
at the time of review.
