    The position is available in the research group Bioinformatics and Statistical Genetics, Dept. Genetics and Biotechnology, Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences () located at Research Centre Foulum, for a period of three years starting January 1st, 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter.     AIM

    The major aim of this Ph.D. program is to develop mathematical modeling tools for integrated analysis of diverse biological data to identify causal genes/proteins and key pathways.

    BACKGROUND

    Large-scale technologies such as microarray and mass spectrometry are being used for genomic and proteomic studies in animal populations. These studies create enormous amounts of data and the analysis of data on this scale is a major current challenge. There is a need to develop mathematical modeling tools that integrate the analysis of these large-scale data with data on DNA sequence, interaction of genes/proteins, chromosomal localization, and literature. An integrated analysis of such biological data is essential for better modeling of gene/protein regulation, and biological networks. Better mathematical modeling tools will facilitate fast and accurate identification of causal genes/proteins and key pathways associated with disease resistance, reproduction and production in animals.

    EDUCATION

    The student will be trained in an interdisciplinary academic environment including expertise in molecular biology, large-scale technologies and computational biology. It will be possible to attend courses in bioinformatics and related areas at the Bioinformatics Research Center (BiRC) at the University of Ųhus, as well as studying at a foreign university for 6-12 months.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Applicants should have a strong interest in computational biology and applications are welcome from students in bioinformatics and related areas, including computer science, statistics, molecular biology, or quantitative genetics. Programming skills is desired.

    COMPENSATION

    Salary and conditions of employment are under the terms of the current agreement for academic scientists employed in the public sector and the circular on the employment structure for scientific staff with research tasks within the public sector.
