DESCRIPTION

The Institute of Bioinformatics, University of Georgia is seeking a senior level software engineer to join a team of scientists and engineers to develop and implement a microbial genome annotation system. The position is available immediately. The initial appointment will be for two years and the potential for extension is good depending funding availability. The responsibility of this position includes (a) designing the architecture of a large and open genome annotation system, which consists of a large collection of genome analysis and prediction tools, multi data warehouses, sophisticated visualization capabilities and web-based applications, based on the conceptual design provided by a team of scientists and (b) coordinating the implementation of this large software system by a team of software engineers and implementing the key components of the system.

REQUIREMENTS

The applicants should have at least a master degree in computational sciences and have 5 years or more experience in (1) designing and implementing large software systems and (2) directing multi-person software system development teams. Substantial experience in architecting complex software systems, designing, Java, J2EE, J2EE technology and architecture, using open-source packages, OOD, distributed systems, DB design and query processing, 2D/3D graphical design and implementation, and web-based GUI is required. In addition, strong communication skill is required. Knowledge in genome annotation, bioinformatics, semantic web and/or service oriented architecture will be a big plus though it is not required.
