POSITION:
(Senior) Product Development Manager (PDM), Bio Informatics Software Development

LOCALE:
Bangalore, India

DESCRIPTION:
The PDM will provide scientific, technical, and managerial leadership to a product development team working on leading-edge scientific software for DNA and protein sequence analysis. S/he will be responsible for leading and mentoring developers and requirements analysts within the team, to ensure the successful conception, design and implementation of enhancements and new modules for our Bio Informatics product suite, meeting overall product schedules and quality standards. To achieve this goal, s/he will provide outstanding scientific and technical leadership and will foster a positive and enthusiastic team environment. As part of an international development organization, s/he will coordinate activities closely with development teams and marketing staff at international locations in the UK and US.

Responsibilities:

• Management of day-to-day operations of a team of 12-15 developers
• Provide scientific and technical leadership and vision for a talented team of software engineers and scientists.
• Clear communication of goals, performance management, resolution of conflicting priorities, and ensuring a high degree of motivation.
• Advise management on technical issues and feasibility of proposed product development strategy, by keeping abreast with scientific and competitive developments and contributing to the BioInformatics product vision.
• Hands-on contribution to software development and scientific software testing effort
• Provide realistic cost estimates for development projects in area of responsibility.
• Pro-actively support the Bangalore management team in implementing measures to achieve increased operational efficiency.
• Mentor, recruit, train and retain staff.

REQUIREMENTS:
A strong background in BioInformatics and extensive familiarity with standard computational methods used for genome and sequence analysis. PhD or equivalent is preferred. Candidate must also have a solid background in software development and management, ideally within a commercial environment.

Skills and Knowledge:

• Scientific track record in BioInformatics or a related discipline
• Very good knowledge of C/C++
• Good grasp of architectural and User Interface design
• Strong expertise in either UNIX/Linux or Windows based software development
• Proven software project planning and management skills, and good familiarity with the software development life cycle

Desired candidate profile:

• 10+ yrs of experience in BioInformatics research and/or application development
• Successful delivery of software development projects end-to-end
• Strong technical and/or scientific leadership, naturally commanding the respect of highly skilled team members.
• Strong motivator and facilitator, experienced requirements negotiator.
• Should have experience implementing and working within a quality-oriented software development process.
• Experience with commercial product development is a strong advantage.
