BACKGROUND

PhD studentships (3 years) are available in the MRC Functional Genetics Unit based in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford.

RESPONSIBILITIES

PhD projects in Chris Ponting's group (http://www.mrcfgu.ox.ac.uk/ponting/cpp.html)
include: (1) New Mammalian Genomes. The investigation of similarities and differences in protein-coding gene complements between human, rhesus macaque, duck-billed platypus and opossum genomes. (2) Functional non-coding sequence. The study of non-coding sequence in the human genome using Lunter's neutral indel model (PLoS Comp. Biol. 2, e5). (3) Chromatin status. The investigation of local rates of nucleotide substitution, repeat insertion, breakage and recombination to infer chromatin status.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should be numerate and possess bioinformatics and data handling skills.

PREFERENCES

Strong interest in genomics and biology.
